Mouth to Snout: CPR training for your pet!

The American Red Cross now offers an emergency first aid training class specifically designed for dog and cat owners.  The course teaches the proper techniques to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR, on dog and cats.  As with humans, CPR for dogs and cats involves chest compressions and mouth to snout resuscitation.

Veterinarians say American pet owners are changing society and pets are a more common sight in public places.  That means there is a greater chance you will come across an animal in need of emergency care.

"This will teach what to look for as far as what's normal, what's not normal, what could they do to help in the mean time,” explains Dr. Patti Canchola, a veterinarian who teaches the pet first aid class.

“It's not replacing veterinarian care.  It's giving them the basics to help their pet in the event of an emergency or an illness."

The next scheduled Dog and Cat First Aid Training Class will be held Saturday, October 18th at the Southeast Colorado Branch of the American Red Cross, 4104 Outlook Boulevard, Suite 135D in Pueblo.  Course topics include responsible pet ownership, administering medications, managing breathing or cardiac emergencies and preparing for natural disasters.  Registration costs $40.  Click here for more information.
