Animal shelters say they collect more strays during the Fourth of July holiday than at any other time of the year. The problem -- fireworks. Ann Davenport of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region said, "An animal has no idea why there are these sudden noises and of course because their hearing is so much more sensitive, it's a much more intense noise for them, it's very loud, especially if you have a dog that's scared of thunderstorms or anything like that."
Davenport says the best way to keep your animals from running off is to keep them indoors. If they are crate trained, shelter workers encourage you to put them in their crates. Otherwise, put them in their favorite spot in the house and keep them there with some toys and goodies.
Staying home with your pets may help calm their fears.
