News First 5/30 named "2007 Station of the Year"

KOAA-TV, News First 5/30, was named "2007 Station of the Year" by the Colorado Broadcasters Association at an awards ceremony in Denver on Saturday night. 

This is the 17th time in the past 21 years that News First 5/30 has earned that honor.

News First 5/30 won awards of "Excellence" in the following categories:

Best Newscast, News First at 10pm

Best Specialty Reporter, James Jarman for investigative reporting

Best Weathercaster, Mike Daniels

Best News Feature, "Soldier Remembered", Lisa Lyden and Photojournalist Gene Cotton

Best Single Program, News First Live from the "Colorado Balloon Classic"

Best Single Spot for a Station, Trafficking Investigation Proof of Performance

Best Public Service Announcement, "Castle West Apartment Fire" - Salvation Army

Best Advertising Sales Promotion, "Mike's Backyard BBQ"

 

News First 5/30 won awards of "Merit" in the following categories:

Best Anchor Team, Rob Quirk and Lisa Lyden

Best Breaking News, "Holly Tornado - First Light" with reporter Bill Folsom

Best Commercial, "Doors" for Crossroads Turning Points

Best Single Sports Program, "Air Force Football Bowl Special" with Lee Douglas, coach Troy Calhoun, and host Brian Jerman

Best Graphics or Animation, "News First - Liquid Blue Refresh"

Best Promotional Campaign, "Local Experience When it Counts" with Mike Daniels, Mike Madson, and Craig Eliot

Best Community Service Project, "Operation Blizzard Benefit"

Best Public Service Announcement, "S-CAP HIM" for the Southern Colorado Aids Project

 

The "Station of the Year" title is conferred upon the station that earns the most points in nearly two dozen categories like those listed above.  The categories cover news content and personalities, community service, special programming, promotion, commercial production, and more.

Entries are sent out of state for impartial judging.  This year, television stations in Illinois judged the Colorado entries.  Similarly, News First 5/30 judged five categories for the Michigan Association of Broadcasters this year.
