A new study touts the benefits of dads who are actively involved in the lives of their children. The review of research finds active fathers or father figures play a big role in reducing behavioral problems among boys, and psychological problems in girls.
Experts say kids who had involved father figures were less likely to smoke or get into trouble with police. They were also more likely to go farther in school and develop good friendships with both boys and girls.
Girls who had good relationships with their dads at age 16 were more likely to be in better relationships with a partner by age 33.
The positive effects were especially significant among socially or economically disadvantaged children.
