Sunless tanning lotions are a quick and safe way to get a tan. but which ones really work? The Good Housekeeping Institute put some sunscreens to the test. Chemist, Nicole Larsen says, "we evaluated five instant and five gradual self-tanners. Instant tanners develop within 24 hours, and gradual tanners can develop over time. About 5 to 7 days maximum. We wanted to see how well these products worked at providing a natural-looking tan. If they left any streaking; if they were blotchy. Also, how well they smelled, how even they looked overall, how easy they were to use, and if they were dry."
The Nivea Sunkissed Firming Moisturizer was the best among the gradual self-tanners tested. It costs $7. "Testers showed results on average within two days. At the maximum, this product says you'll see it in five. So that was a good result," says Larsen. One tester says, "it dries well and it's very even. It's really smooth and it also moisturizes really well."
The Guerlain Terracotta Self-Tanning Gel got top marks in the one-time application category. It costs $50. "Panelists liked guerlain because it gave an even, natural tan. They liked the smell of the product and it gave instant results within 24 hours," says Larsen.
If you're looking for a more budget friendly option, Good Housekeeping recommends Neutrogena Sun Fresh Sunless Foam and L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Self-Tanning Mist-both are one-time application products.
